Character project and Zbrush learnings

13:15

At the beginning of this week we began working on our first character project of the year. I've always preferred characters over anything else and much preferred concepting them than I did modelling them.

I was aware of Zbrush but had never actually used it before and upon hearing that we were going to be expected to use it for this project I decided to spend a week before term started familiarizing myself with the program and seeing how much I could learn on my own (since I very rarely like to do that)

Whilst I knew my work wasn't fantastic I was impressed with how quickly I'd picked it up and how much I enjoyed it!

Since I managed to do the sculpt so quickly I learned how to retopologise in Zbrush and also practice in Substance painter which I'd only had a little bit of experience with (and a lot of help!) I also wanted to work on my presentations of my 3D work since I was taking it a lot more seriously now.

So when we began the character project I already had a bit of a head start, especially since I'd started my concepts over the christmas break.

I knew my character was going to be mostly covered but since I had the time I wanted to do an anatomy sculpt to try and learn as much as I could and get a good base for the costume too.

So here's my progress so far! I've received a lot of fantastic feedback so far (the wonders of facebook) from other character artists with the common theme being 'work in a lower subdivision and nail the basic shapes first'. For some reason when I went back into my model I couldn't lower the subdivision (probably something to do with the way I saved it) but I now know for next time- I intend to practice a lot more!
