Re-topo, re-bake

10:51

RIP to the optimism I had in baking... After spending yesterday nailing my colour concepts after catching up with myself quicker than I'd planned I decided that I should re-consider my unwrap and my topology. It was also advised that I make my bakes a higher resolution so they'd look better being down-sized to 2048.

So I started out pretty chill, changing my topology, making it more efficient and freeing myself up some tris for extra stuff. I then began to pack my UVs; tedious but do-able. Next I came to baking thinking it was gonna be just as easy as it was two days ago...... NOPE.

I'm not sure how I made it so easy the first time but whatever happened to make it so easy I made up for today. I spent a lot of time trying to work out what on earth I'd done wrong only to find out that I had to set up my high poly as a cage for my low poly (something I'd never needed to do before). So I spent considerable time re-sizing and re-positioning parts of my mesh in an attempt to make them bake properly. After multiple crashes I began to get incredibly frustrated.

It finally clicked to resize my entire mesh to the default size of a Zbrush import and after a little bit of tweaking I finally got it working again! Stress over. I hate baking.

Tomorrow I intend to finally start texturing with this final concept in mind. In all honesty I don't really like it that much but I found it so difficult to get a good colour scheme I just went with the first one that looked 'okay'. I'm hoping it'll look better when its textured.
