Okay marvelous designer, you win for now...

So after getting a lot of feedback again and watching a bunch more tutorials I decided to give marvelous designer another chance. I knew it could be a powerful tool if I got my head around it but I was feeling very much like I was wasting my time and getting nowhere with it when there were other options available to me.


I found out I could use different types of materials as well as options to change the properties of the materials. I managed to add layers of fabric to the dress while getting the ruffled effect I wanted by making the edges elasticated. This gave me the volume I needed in the dress to add a final layer.


I messed around with settings until I got something I was happy with.


I attempted making the sleeves with various techniques but they just wouldn't work out how I wanted. I think they may have been too complex to do with my minimal skills. (I'm sure any seamstress would look at my patterns and shake their head in shame)


After a whole huge bunch more of errors and crashes and slamming the keyboard I got the dress mesh into my zbrush project. I pulled it around a bit to get the shape I wanted and then started to block in the sleeves in Zbrush.

Whilst I was looking for reference for the sleeves and realising how hard it would be to model them from scratch, I found an image with a slightly different sleeve but it somehow made something click in my head to give the sleeves another go.


With the little time I had left before I needed to leave I threw this together. Though its a shambles at the moment its definitely a step in the right direction and just needs a little bit of tweaking before it works!

I feel massive relief to have finally got through this (almost) and I'm happy that I decided to give it one more try. I really want to have a good practice in MD when I get the chance, probably making some already existing clothing items would be a hell of a lot easier than making them up like I have!
